Betty Sanders' gift endows another full-tuition scholarship
May 12, 2009 Update: July 22, 2009
Last week, Meadville Lombard received a gift from Betty Sanders to fully endow the Hardy and Betty Sanders Scholarship for Excellence. This scholarship is a wonderful tribute to two dedicated Unitarian Universalist lay leaders.
Hardy Sanders was one of the co-founders of Bates Container Ltd, a corporation near Dallas that specializes in corrugated boxes. After his death in 2003, he was remembered as a dedicated member of First Unitarian Church of Dallas, as a friend to other UU churches in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but more strikingly as a man who lived his Unitarian Universalist values throughout his life. In 1995, Hardy received the President's Award for distinguished volunteer service to Unitarian Universalism, which was conferred on him by then-UUA President John Buehrens. In 2003, he was awarded, posthumously, a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree from Meadville Lombard Theological School.
Betty Sanders currently serves as the Vice President of Community Relations at Bates Container. She, too, has been an active lay leader at First Unitarian Church of Dallas and for the greater Unitarian Universalist community, as well as in the communities where she lives and works.
The Sanders Scholarship will be available for a student entering in 2010 and is a full-tuition scholarship. It is the fourth such scholarship established in as many years. We are so grateful to Mrs. Sanders for her continued commitment to the mission of this school and to liberal religious leadership. Application Information here
