Mark A. Hicks, Director of the Fahs Collaborative
Directing the work of the Fahs Collaborative is part of Mark’s portfolio as Angus MacLean Professor of Religious Education at Meadville Lombard Theological School. Specializing in “transformative learning, Mark comes to The Collaboarative bringing his experience of establishing a gold-standard professional development program that transformed the teaching and learning lives of more than 800 public school teachers in greater Washington DC (1996-2009). Known as a teacher’s teacher, he creates evocative learning experiences that lead to new insights, thoughtful relationships, and innovative practices that starve business-as-usual social practices. He joins the proud tradition of UU religoius education scholars (notably Fahs and MacLean) who have studied at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City, earning both a Doctorate in Philosophy and Education and a Master's degree in higher education.
His scholarship has appeared in journals such as The Journal of Transformative Education, Multicultural Perspectives, Educational Studies, and most recently, the first edition Handbook of Research on the Social Foundations of Education. In 2011, he delivered the Fahs Lecture at the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly, challenging the Movement (and the field of religious education) to expand its conception of faith development to include the developmental needs of people targeted for social oppression (see lecture here). In November 2012, he will address the Association for Liberal Religious Studies/Collegium on the topic of "leaning" as a spiritual and pedadogical framework for inviting learners to expand the boundaries of their soul/sense of human potential.
He is the developer of "Building the World We Dream About" and "Beloved Conversations: Meditations on Race and Ethnicity," both of which model the practice of transformative teaching and learning in the service of faith formation.
He is a lay leader at All Souls Church, Unitarian; Washington, D.C. and formerly at The Riverside Church in New York City.
Halcyon Westall, Assistant Director of the Fahs Collaborative
Halcyon Westall is Assistant Director for Transformative Religious Education at The Fahs Collaborative at Meadville Lombard.
Halcyon earned Credentialed Religious Educator status from the Unitarian Universalist Association in 2012. She has served as a congregational Religious Educator and also played several leadership roles in our Movement, facilitating pastoral care in youth ministry, as a member of the Right Relations Team for General Assembly, curriculum development, teaching Renaissance modules, and as a peer facilitator for the New England Region. She serves the Liberal Religious Education Association (LREDA) as a Good Officer and a mentor for religious education professionals in the Credentialing process. Halcyon is currently working toward a masters degree in Holistic Leadership.
