Purpose of Listserv

As an effective tool of communication, M/L is pleased to sponsor an electronic mailing list for M/L community members and associates. The Computer Consultant administers the listserv.

The listserv is intended to connect and share information among members and affiliates of the Meadville community. It is to be assumed that the content of listserv posts primarily relates to Meadville Lombard community life and academics (residential and MRP,) Chicago-area and ACTS school events, Unitarian Universalism and liberal religion. Subscribers are encouraged to use discretion in terms of length and content of communication (ie: the use of forwards, etc.)

Participation in M/L?s listserv is a privilege and not a right. M/L reserves the right to suspend participants from lists who violate standards and rules put forward by the Meadville Council.

Function of Email List and Responsibilities

The M/L Council is responsible for setting general standards for on-list conduct (see below.) The purpose of these standards will be to maintain fairness, respect for individual and group rights, to see that all subscribers are accorded worth and dignity in list communications and to protect M/L from legal action or damage to its reputation.

Listserv participants help determine whether these standards are being maintained and when the standards are violated. Should a conflict arise on the listserv, and attempts to resolve the conflict fail, a community member may follow the grievance procedure outlined in the Meadville Lombard Community Handbook. Subsequent actions may include temporarily or permanently suspending list membership and temporarily or permanently suspending posting privileges of a listserv member.

Standards

• Postings regarding Chicago-area concerns and activities should be notated with Local in the subject line. Similarly, postings regarding political issues or events should be marked Political in the subject line.

• The M/L listserv may not be used for commercial announcements, except occasional announcements that are directly related to Meadville Lombard. For example, an author might post messages about new books of interest to list subscribers or community members may post job opportunities and seminary-related resources for sale (ie: books, liturgical supplies.) Listserv members must use their discretion regarding which posts are appropriate.

• Attachments are discouraged. Because many subscribers' e-mail programs cannot deal with attached files, and many subscribers do not wish to receive attached files, subscribers to the M/L listserv are discouraged from attaching files to their postings. If a subscriber persists in attaching files to postings, the Student Leadership Team, the Dean of Students and the President may ban the subscriber from the list.

• The messages on the M/L listserv do not necessarily represent the views of Meadville Lombard Theological School or M/L affiliate organizations.

• All communication on the listserv should be exchanged in the spirit of affirming the inherent worth and dignity of every person. If members of the Meadville Lombard listserv feel as if the listserv has been used in a manner that violates their self-respect, they are encouraged to raise the issue directly with the listserv member in question. Should this direct conversation be impossible, or yield no resolution, the aggrieved party may follow the grievance procedure outlined in Section IV D of the Meadville Lombard Community Handbook.

• List subscribers participate in the listserv at their own risk. Members of the listserv participate at their own risk. Members of the M/L staff, faculty, Board of Trustees and committee members do so solely as private individuals, and should not be assumed to be participating in any official capacity unless otherwise stated. Neither M/L nor the Computer Consultant are responsible for the content of the listserv.

• The listserv may not be made private, moderated, or hidden.
