Innovative Library/IT Director Hired

Dr. Sharon Welch, Provost at Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, announced the appointment of Rana Hutchinson Salzmann as Director of Library and Information Technology. Ms. Salzmann began her official duties on January 2, 2014.

“We are so pleased to have a professional of Rana’s caliber in our midst,” Dr. Welch commented. “She brings library and technology experience to the complex challenges of cultivating and promoting the cross-culturally engaged and socially responsible use of information technology by our students, alumni/ae, and scholars within and beyond Unitarian Universalism. Rana is an innovator, an educator, an editor, and a designer. Her amazing toolbox of skills will help Meadville Lombard continue to be at the forefront of 21st century theological education.”

In her prior role as Manager of Content Strategy at the American Planning Association (APA), Ms. Salzmann oversaw provision of library services and implementation of web-based information tools. During her nearly six year career with the APA, she managed the library budget, personnel, collections, and services. Ms. Salzmann developed continuing education and professional development programs, managed licensing agreements and database subscriptions, worked with archivists to ensure preservation of historically significant APA materials, and trained staff on taxonomy tagging and metadata conventions to increase visibility of content online.

“Recruiting Rana Salzmann to our Meadville Lombard faculty sends a signal to our students, prospective students, alums, donors, friends, and colleagues in theological education that our Wiggin Library and archival collections will be managed and expanded with great sophistication,” noted Meadville Lombard President, Rev. Dr. Lee C. Barker. “We fully intend to set a new standard for merging our historical reputation for education and scholarship with current and future technological know-how that will broaden our reach and enhance our mission. I couldn’t be more excited about the kinds of projects we anticipate developing with Rana’s active participation.”

Ms. Salzmann graduated with a B.A. in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA in 2000. She holds an M.A. in English from Chicago’s DePaul University and received an M.S. in Library & Information Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 2005. Prior to entering library school, she taught college composition and reading courses at three Chicago-area community colleges. She holds memberships in the American Library Association, Illinois Library Association, and the Special Libraries Association.

Meadville Lombard Theological School educates students in the Unitarian Universalist tradition to embody liberal religious ministry in Unitarian Universalist congregations and wherever else they are called to serve. Meadville Lombard does this to take into the world our Unitarian Universalist vision of justice, equity, and compassion.
