Davidoff Fund to Scholarship Ten Seminarians
Ten seminarians studying for parish ministry, five from Meadville Lombard Theological School and five from Starr King School for the Ministry, will receive a $500 scholarship to attend the 2014 General Assembly (GA) in Providence, RI. The scholarships will be funded by the UUA Davidoff Fund for Lay Leadership.
“I urge every seminarian to attend GA at some point while they are in school,” said Doug McCusker, 2013 Davidoff Scholar. “For me as a seminarian and ministerial candidate, I gained so much from the networking and practical knowledge that I can apply in my evolving ministerial formation. Every GA experience is unique because it reflects where we are in our religious journeys at that time.”
The Jerry and Denny Davidoff Fund honors the skilled and devoted lay leadership in our movement by Jerry and Denny Davidoff, created through the generosity of their sons and daughters-in-law.
“This is a passion of mine,” commented Denny Davidoff. “Our future ministers must understand the governance of the UUA and the vital role played by lay leaders in the member congregations. Presence at a GA is like Polity 101. I am pleased to be able to direct Davidoff Fund income to make it possible for seminary students to get to Providence.”
The scholarships will be awarded out of the President’s office at each school to students entering their second or third year of studies towards parish ministry. Each student will be expected to assist at their school's exhibit booth, participate in school-sponsored programs, and attend all plenary sessions. Awardees are encouraged to request delegate status from their home congregations and will be expected to send a brief reflection about the plenary experience to both Denise Davidoff and their respective school.
Denise Davidoff served twelve years on the Board of Trustees, eight of them as Moderator of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Prior to her service on the Board, she led the Unitarian Universalist Women’s Federation, chaired the General Assembly Planning Committee, and served on the Ministerial Fellowship Committee. She currently serves as the Senior Consultant for Development and Alumni/ae Affairs at Meadville Lombard Theological School.
The Davidoff Fund is also providing scholarships to lay leaders of congregations to attend General Assembly who have not had lay leader representation at GA since 2010.
