36 Credit Hours are required to complete the MALS.

Full-time students will finish in 18 months.

Breakdown of required 36 credit hours

Required Courses: 12 credit hours

One course in each of the following areas: Theology, History, Scripture, Religious Education (Faith Formation).

Elective Courses: 9 credit hours

Students may choose three additional courses from any area. 

Community Studies: 9 credit hours

All MALS students are required to take the 9-credit Community Studies seminar and internship in the first year.

Project Lab and Integrative Project: 6 credits

  • All MALS students will participate in a “Project Lab” (3 credits) to guide them as they develop a proposal for their integrative project.
  • After their proposals are approved, all MALS students will complete an Integrative Project (3 credits)

Optional Additional Internship: 9 hours

Students selecting the optional additional internship will take 12 academic credits instead of 21. Students pursuing this option will take no elective courses.

Transfer Credits: up to 12 Hours

Degree can be completed in one year if 12 approved credits are transferred into the program from an accredited graduate program. Transfer credits must be approved by the academic advisor. Credits transferred are listed as P (pass) on student transcripts. (Note: this option is for dual degree MDiv students who enroll in the MALS program for an additional internship.)
