Meets Mondays, 2-3:30 PM Central Time, Aug 21, Sept 11 & 25, Oct 16 & 30, Nov 13. In this class, we will become acquainted with 1) the corpus of laws, narrative, and poetry that comprise the Hebrew Scriptures and 2) the variety of interpretive strategies that have been used to understand that library. We will discuss the pre-history of the documents as well their subsequent use in the history of biblical interpretation. Students will become familiar with critical methods of reading and conversant with the diversity of perspectives on the text that we find in scholarship, in religion, and in popular culture.
