Within is broken up into two 12-week terms each year, Fall and Spring, which each contain different content. You may begin either in Fall or in Spring.

Each term is comprised of:

  • 6 Online Lessons with resources for learning, including videos, readings, music, and artistic resources, as well as questions for reflection and projects to explore your inner landscape vis-a-vis race, identity, and the practices of racial justice. Although the format is similar, the content of the Lessons is different for BIPOC+ and white people. These online Lessons are available via the learning platform Teachable and a new Lesson will become available approximately every 2 weeks. Participants may take as much time as they need with each Lesson. Lesson content will be available for up to a year following the start of the term.
  • 6 Learning Pod Gatherings where you will engage the material in small groups of 4-6 other folks from the learning community. Learning Pods will be self-facilitated and meet approximately every two weeks online. A suggested agenda and discussion questions for your Learning Pod will be included in each Lesson. We will be assisting you in connecting with folks in your course to form a Learning Pod. You will receive an email with contact information for the other members of your Learning Pod before the first Lesson.
  • 3 Meaning Making Sessions, approximately once a month, where we will come together in a large group with other folks from our courses via Zoom to worship, learn, connect, and share our evolving understanding of this journey. Meaning Making Sessions will be facilitated by members of the Beloved Conversations Design Team and our partners. All Meaning Making Sessions are recorded and will be available for later viewing if you cannot attend live.

Given the need for healthy boundaries and the additional challenges of leading anti-racism work in congregations and communities, religious professionals will be sorted into and gather in religious professional-only Learning Pods within their course.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a virtual learning opportunity. Basic skills with email, simple websites, and the online meeting platform Zoom are essential to successful participation in this course.

*Reparations Note: White participants with the means to do so are encouraged to consider paying an additional $50, in recognition of the historic legacy of racist economic policies and the ways in which generational wealth and greater access to economic opportunity have privileged white people as a group for hundreds of years. These extra funds will go towards supporting the program and providing scholarships to those who need them.

**Interdependence Note: Regardless of your racial identity, if your class privilege and/or professional expense budget allows you to pay more so that others may pay less, please consider adding an additional contribution to your total. These extra funds will go towards supporting the program and providing scholarships to those who need them.

Equity Note: Full and partial scholarships are available to those who need them. Please contact us at belovedconversations@meadville.edu before registering to request a scholarship.
